Word Aware is an accredited, practical, and interactive training designed to equip educators and other professionals with a clear framework and structured approach to developing students’ vocabulary knowledge.
Aligned with the Science of Reading, this full-day course explores the critical role of vocabulary in literacy and learning while providing practical strategies to support vocabulary instruction across the school day.
The training is built around the three core strands of the Word Aware approach:
- Creating language-rich environments that foster curiosity and engagement with words
- Explicitly teaching vocabulary using a clear and structured process
- Supporting students to become confident and independent word learners
Rather than prescribing fixed vocabulary lists, Word Aware supports culturally and linguistically responsive vocabulary instruction by helping educators select meaningful and relevant words within their own classroom and curriculum contexts.
Participants Will Learn To
- Understand the relationship between oral language, vocabulary, and literacy development
- Explore key principles of word learning and vocabulary instruction
- Use the Word Aware framework to explicitly teach vocabulary across the curriculum
- Select high-utility vocabulary to support comprehension and academic language
- Embed vocabulary instruction into everyday classroom routines and interactions
Designed for educators and professionals supporting language and literacy development in Kindergarten to Grade 7 settings, though many of the principles and strategies are also relevant for older students.
Participants who attend the full-day training will receive accredited Word Aware certification. Course details, Zoom links and handouts will be sent via email to all registered participants one week prior to the commencement of the training.
